Video games
revolutionized
the leisure habits
of a generation,
and Nolan
Bushnell is the
man who started
the revolution -
with Pong. It was
very primitive, a
simple to-and-fro
on a black-and-
white screen, but
it was the first
video game
#
Pong was soon
followed by Space
Invaders - the
first of the shoot-
'em-up games. At
this stage people
still had to go to a
bar or a games
arcade to play.
But Atari's home
entertainment
system was about
to change that
#
Atari exploded on
the games scene
in 1972. The
millions of people
who spent hours
hunched over
their games
consoles pushed
the company's
stock sky-high;
and Bushnell took
his profits and
left. Years later
he returned to
the scene of his
great triumph
#
A new generation
of interactive
video games will
take the industry
into the next
century. Games
that rely on voice
recognition are
here, while tie-
ups with the
movie business
mean players
may soon be able
to star in their
favorite films
